Building a bird cage is an exciting project in which you use your creativity to design each part of the cage. It costs less to build a cage than to purchase a ready made cage at a pet store. Follow the steps below to build your own custom bird cage.

Necessary Things: Wood, Varnish, Chain-link fencing or mesh wire, Bolt or lock, Feeding dish and perch

Cleaning tray, Disinfectant, Basic tools and staple gun:

1. To create an all wire bird cage, get a piece of wire the same size as the cage sides. Bend the wire in the necessary shape to form the cage or cut six equal pieces of wire and attach together with cage clips, wire ties or a staple gun.

2. Sketch the dimensions of the cage according to the size of your bird. For a bird like a macaw, plan a bigger cage (40 inches wide x 40 inches long x 48 inches high). A intermediate to small cage is suitable for small birds (28 inches wide x 28 inches long x 32 inches high to 18 inches wide x 18 inches long x 18 inches high).

3. Compose the frame. Buy plain, untreated wood from a hardware store. Apply a non-toxic paint and finish to both sides and let it dry completely. Cut the wood into four proportionate pieces.

4. Put food dishes and a perch inside the bird cage. Install a ready made, pull-out cleaning tray beneath the cage.

5. Slash an opening on the front side of the cage for the door. Make it big enough for the bird and allow physically space to clean the cage. Put a bolt or a small lock exterior the door. If you plan to breed the bird later, make an additional hole on one side of the cage and secure it for the time being.

6. Decide the type of cage you plan to build. Choose from dome-shaped, standing on legs, no wheels plus hanging. Look through through bird magazines or visit a pet store to get more cage ideas. Draw a sketch of the cage.

7. Purchase a roll of chain-link fencing wire or a mesh wire to use between the wooden pieces. Choose a precise pattern that with no trouble holds perches and toys but is narrow enough to stop the bird from getting out. Disinfect the wire. Cut the cable into four equal sized pieces designed for the sides of the cage. Use a staple pistol to fasten the wire to the wooden stand. For the top and bottom of the cage, cut two more portion of rope and attach as described above.
